Proper Operation Of The KHF-950 System Using KFS-594 Control Unit

At Duncan Aviation, we have received several KHF-950 HF (high-frequency) systems with a KFS-594 Miniature Control Unit installed that were reported as being stuck in transmit mode or changing frequencies each time a transmission was attempted. However, after bench testing, no faults were found with the suspected units. 

Proper operation of the controller requires following specific programming and tuning steps. The following is a quick refresher on how to operate the system correctly.

Entering and Navigating Programming Mode

To enter programming mode, activate the cursor (flashing digit) by pressing the right inner knob. A 0 (zero) should start flashing under the CH markings. Pressing the knob advances the cursor to the next field. To select the desired value (0-9) for each field, turn the right knob. Continue to advance the cursor through all fields until no digits are left flashing to stow the cursor.

This dash flashes once when you change any digit and will continue to flash until you momentarily press the mic key (reverting to the previously stored channel) or press the STO button (storing the new channel).

Once you have selected the desired channel and/or all the digits of the correct frequency, or stored them in program mode, momentarily key the mic button (press and release). This initiates the tuning of the transmitter, during which time you will see the display blank and the TX indication next to “MHz” flash. Once the flashing TX disappears and the frequency digits return, the antenna tuning cycle is complete, and you are ready to transmit on the selected frequency.

NOTE: The first one or two digits (MHz) are displayed in the upper right of the display. The last four digits (kHz) are displayed at the bottom of the display.

Direct-Tune Frequency Mode

When testing the KHF-950 HF system, first select channel 0 (direct-tune frequency mode) on the HF controller, then enter the desired frequency. Use the programming mode steps previously discussed, and then momentarily key the mic to tune the antenna.

You are now in simplex operation. In this mode, the same frequency is used for both transmitting and receiving.

Simplex Operation

By selecting a channel (1 through 19), the user can store preset frequencies using the white STO button. To program a preset channel frequency in simplex mode, first select the channel to be programmed. Using the same programming mode steps, set the desired frequency and press the STO button. You will then see TX in the upper right next to MHz. Press STO again to store the same frequency for transmit.

Semi-Duplex Mode

You can also program each channel for semi-duplex operation. Semi-duplex operation is a mode in which you receive on one frequency and transmit on a different frequency. To program a channel for semi-duplex operation, first select the desired channel, then enter the receive frequency and press the STO button. Note that the TX annunciation has appeared in the upper right-hand corner. You may now enter the desired transmit frequency and press the STO button again. The selected channel is now programmed for duplex operation.

The STO button can perform a couple of other functions in addition to storing preset frequencies.

  1. If you press the STO button while the microphone is keyed, it transmits a 1000Hz tone. This breaks the squelch on some stations.
  2. Pressing the STO button will clear any error conditions, which are annunciated by a flashing E being displayed for more than three seconds.
  3. If the display shows a TX annunciation upon power-up, and you are not able to control the cursor, pressing the STO button three times should clear this indication and allow for full function of the HF controller.

The Bottom Line

Not every KHF-950 system that appears to have a transmit problem is actually broken. The controller has specific programming and antenna-tuning steps you must follow.

A simple way to remember it is:

Select the frequency → briefly key the mic → wait for the antenna to finish tuning → then transmit.

This sequence can prevent the system from appearing to be stuck in transmit or behaving as though the frequency is changing unexpectedly.
