Rockwell Collins announced the discontinuance of the RTU-870 series Radio Tuning Units in 2014, including the RTU-870(A), RTU-870(B), RTU-870(C), RTU-870(F), and RTU-870(T). Since then, operators have been encouraged to transition to the RTU-42X0 platform, which features updated LCD technology and is supported through available installation STCs (Supplemental Type Certificates) on certain aircraft platforms.
While the upgrade path remains the primary long-term solution for many operators, it is not always the most practical or cost-effective option, particularly for aircraft where avionics modernization is not justified by mission profile, aircraft age, or residual value. As a result, a significant number of RTU-870-equipped aircraft remain in service today, with operators seeking alternatives to full system replacement.
To support these operators, Duncan Aviation has developed the capability to provide continued maintenance support for RTU-870 units, including repair services for the Gas Discharge Display assemblies. This capability helps extend the operational life of existing units and reduces the need for immediate avionics upgrades.
In practical terms, when an RTU-870 unit fails, it can be sent to Duncan Aviation’s Component Repair Shop, where it undergoes evaluation and component-level repair, including restoration of display functionality where applicable. Once repairs are completed and the unit is tested, it is returned to service for reinstallation on the aircraft.
If needed, Duncan Aviation can also support troubleshooting, removal, and replacement at any of its MRO or Satellite facilities.
By supporting legacy RTU-870 units, Duncan Aviation helps bridge the gap between legacy avionics systems and full fleet modernization strategies. For operators flying aircraft still equipped with these units, this support provides an additional option to maintain reliability and extend service life where full avionics upgrades are not immediately feasible.
